The girls and I went to our local library a few days ago to find some books on Homeschooling.
They had none. NONE! So my wishlist on Fishpond is getting out of control. I'm so keen to read the good and the bad things about homeschooling, we want to know what we're getting ourselves into!
The Ultimate Book of Homeschooling Ideas
The Imperfect Homeschoolers Guide to Homeschooling
Free Range Learning - How Homeschooling Changes Everything
The First Year of Homeschooling Your Child
These are a few that have made their way into my wishlist.
Monday 24th January came and went and it was *bliss* not needing to rush the kids into routine. No uniforms were ironed. No lunches were packed. No shoes and socks needed to be found. No rushing around pushing the kids to hurry, hurry, hurry.
It was splendid!
We have visited a college in Brisbane which can provide a curriculum through their Distance Education unit which has the Christian core values that we are looking for. Although we are still going to check out some Steiner curriculm before we make our decision. I'm just keen to get started but Matt wants to make sure we pick what's right for us.
The work we've been doing so far has been on-the-fly, wherever we happen to be and for however long. I have loved this approach because it's so fluid. One day it was the coffee shop after mumma's coffee with friends - Rachael amazed me by sitting still (which she never does) and doing 20 minutes of her Alphabet book, matching up beginning sounds with objects. I love being there to encourage and praise her as she is learning.
Jessica did her first Unit in her Year TWO book on English and Mathematics - the bookshop had no Year One books left - but we are four pages in and she is doing really well! Bright girl that one.
Sometimes it's at the park, sometimes it's on the trampoline, sometimes it's in the car - the learning around here is happening wherever we are and I love it.
Not sure when we become 'official' homeschoolers. Maybe when the first bundle of books arrives in the post. Yes, that sounds good.
Happy Australia Day!
Amanda
P.S If you're a Homeschooler and have any advice to give, I'm all ears!
